Colorful, vibrant and made from handmade Kantha textile, these loosely tailored robes have pockets and they're reversible. Its lightweight and soft composition make it a versatile option for any season. Originating from the rural women of India, Kantha is a stunning hand-stitch embroidery used to secure layers of repurposed cloth. Handcrafted in Rajasthan, India, known for its vibrant colors and cultural richness, this kaftan is a testament to ethical production and quality. Measurements: 42"L.
Kantha products you see have evolved out of a rich tradition. For many centuries, women living in the poorest regions of India and Bangladesh have produced Kantha quilts and cushions as a way to affordably reuse old sari (what traditional Indian dress is made of) fabric. In Bangladesh, old cloth is said to have protective qualities. Kantha quilts are a bit like the concept of “t-shirt quilts” we see today.
In our kantha products, layers of used saris are sewn together with a repeated running stitch to make a quilted textile that is both functional and beautiful. Complimentary patches are applied where the fabric has torn or worn thin, adding unique beauty.
Kantha products like these bear the patches of the women who loved them first! And every new stitch tells the story of a women who is helping break the cycle of poverty for her family and community by using her skills to help provide for her family.
